Drill

What is drill?

The drill that I am talking about is not an implement with a pointed end to bore holes into objects, but, according to The American Heritage High School Dictionary, it means to train(soldiers) in marching.

The purpose of drill...

  • To promote habits of:
    • obedience o discipline
    • self-respect
    • self-control (by not moving unless commanded)
    • concentration (by listening to the commands properly)
    • physical bearing
  • To develop leadership
By being a drill commander (i.e. the person who gives commands to a drill squad), the member will develop leadership skills by the natural leadership which is encouraged at drill.
  • To encourage Espirit de Corps
Espirit de Corps means to encourage pride in a unit, which makes the fellow member ashamed to bring discredit to it and makes him/her ready to sacrifice for it. Drill helps build up Espirit de Corps because it is not an individual activity because no one boy can shine at it alone however one individual can spoil the whole company.

When?

It depends on the company but it is normally done every meeting for about 1 to 2.5 hours per meeting. Currently 10th KL is having a session of 2 hours of drill per meeting in order to achieve excellence in drill.

Drill Competitions

Drill competitions are organized to improve the quality of drill. The competitions consist of drill teams competing against one another. Each company participating will send at least one drill team to represent it. Each team will give a drill presentation according to a drill sequence provided in advance by the judges. The drill squads will be judged in four main areas, i.e. uniform, following the sequence order, commanding and overall drill presentation.
So far, 10th KL had participated in three drill competitions. In Year 2002, we emerged as the overall champion in the KL Battalion Drill Competition. In Year 2006, we participated in the National Drill Competition (PESTA 2006) and Staff Sergent Mark Tan clinched the Bronze Medal for the Best Commander Category.
